So Many Concepts | Team - Week 3

Empathize, Define Continuing from last week. We had our first client meeting this week were we got to present the groundwork we did the week prior. From now on we established to have weekly meetings every Wednesday, with possibility of postponing or changing to biweekly meetings depending on how far we have progressed. But for this meeting we also had our own questions we wanted answers to, to make sure we could continue on the the next phase. As all of this is very relevant to gauge what type of experience we would want to craft. Our Questions:

  • Is "Dystopia" separate from "Utopia"? Should the audience experience the first part before the second part? Is there time in between these two parts?

  • How many people can be in the exhibition room? How many people could be expected?

  • What is the expected target audience(age demographic), does it align with the usual audience?

  • How customizable is the stage? Can any kind of structures be built within?

  • How long would you want the experience to last for the audience?

  • Do you expect to charge people for entry?

  • Do you want people to walk in and out, or for the play to be in a time slot?

  • How long do you plan to have this production running?

  • What draws people into Det Norske Teatret?

Here are the answers and some notes we got during this meeting:

  • Try to define what is a unique theatrical experience, levels of performativity

  • Live human performance, playing with performative impulse, connection between audience and actors, breaking the fourth wall

  • The audience is used to being in a more performative play, how to have a dialogue with a representative. of the AI, can be human actors, presence is generating some responses- verbal/nonverbal

  • Installation based obj/sound/seeking to communicate through different sensory inputs

  • Expectation of communal experience, noticing how other people are reacting to the play

  • Positioning of the audience – facing each other, should not be traditional how we exist as a group in the space

  • 3 groups each group 10-20 to 60 (flexible with duration and audience numbers), depending on the experience

  • Venue is allowed 180 audience members

  • Charged for entry, student discounts, free tickets, pricing could be adjusted to the final product

  • STAGE – flexible, 180 seats, huge entrance, possible to take obj in, no place to hide in the room, everything is visible

  • Room with a lot of concentration, people are there to exp./get something/be part of something

  • Part 1 will be launched with a small reading (takes place in a different stage), not relevant for the main production, start some discussion, listen to the audience

  • Part 2 will be like an exhibition

  • - relatively dystopic view, small light of hope at the end, what do Adam and eve represent – hope, can utopia and dystopia be separated, more of a spiritual question

  • Open talk about philosophical questions related to r.u.r. and AI, find level of complexity that does not “show” people what to think, so they can bring discussion

  • Flexible people in house workshops that can build and construct space, not traditional

  • Not a lot of experience with wearables

  • Communication via Teams, Wednesday mornings (9.00- 10.00)

  • Presenting concepts, loose financial planning, pros and cons, logistics

  • Stage lighting, projectors – available on site already

This is how we handled every meeting onwards, we presented the work, got notes feedback and answers, worked on those and repeated the process.

Concepts Ideate After this meeting we read through the notes and grabbed the most relevant answers and notes in order to create fitting concepts within the following Parameters Project Limitations:   Audience: 30 -/+

Timeframe: 15 - 30

No available wearables

Room Measurements: tbd

Gamified: Don’t give them tasks, guide them instead.

Narrative: let them explore

Simple interactions (complex concepts)

Localization (Norwegian)

One engineer available to us We then each created our own concepts and gathered to give feedback to eachother and hope to narrow it down to 3 for the next presentation. We ended up with 3 concepts. Narrative/Storytelling

The concept consists of a full room installation that showcases an interactive story being told by the AI to the audience (max. 30 people) that’s accompanied by visuals (projections, lights) and audio (music and sound effects). “Loose Prequel to R.U.R, before the robots killed all humans”

Essence

Interactive storytelling

Branching storyline

Artistic/narrative experience

Goal

Experience the story and explore different scenarios based on the audience decisions

Audience interactions

Sitting, voting device (bracelet yes – no, small 4-6 button controller)

Sandbox: "Inside the AI" The concept consists of multiple installations in an open space which makes use of the entire room. The room represents the AI’s “playground” using lights, visuals, props, sounds and music. Some of the installations will be interactive and others just artistic representations.

Essence

Exploration

Playground

Goal

The audience explores the understanding/possibilities/threats of AI

Audience interactions

  • Tactile interaction with installations

  • Completing different physical/digital puzzles/challenges

AI Generated world and story

“What would a world look like if machines take over the world?” - This is the main question of the concept. The room shows different universes and how they would look based on different timelines/universes. The narrative of the play could be connected to the R.U.R play by representing a sequel to the events presented in the play or just showcase the different interpretations of how the future can look based on different scenarios of how AI evolved in our society.

Essence

Visual/narrative experience

Goal

The audience explores the different timelines/universes and finds out the backstory of each scenario

OR

The audience answers the AI’s question and the world changes based on their answers

Possible audience interactions

  • Phone input, open ended answers (AI process answers to fit them in archetype)

  • Yes/No voting (bracelet)

  • Main control station in the room

We did a S.W.O.T analysis on all of these and planned to present them for the next meeting.
